SLunionisland » User Group Union Island: International unions in Second Life Mon, 25 Jan 2010 16:04:53 +0000 en hourly 1 August User Group meetup Tue, 05 Aug 2008 16:07:39 +0000 Johninnit Ni August User Group

Many thanks to everyone who came by today for the User Group meeting – especially those US colleagues who had to get up pretty early to catch the rest of us Europeans.

We had a very productive discussion, ranging around changes to new user orientation, and how we might better support our union noobs, how we could improve staffing rotas and even use greeter robots to help link real people together better, how we could find and train evangelists from union organisations to help in turn train more users. We also had a good discussion on expectations and potential of virtual worlds, and how we make the most of the new environment, rather than replicating offline habits that no longer make so much sense.

Some more discussion needed around this, but it’s given us some good practical steps that we’ll be working on in coming months, to improve the experience a lot for our users, so watch this space!

User Group report 6 May 08 Thu, 08 May 2008 08:03:05 +0000 Johninnit Ni Thanks to everyone who came along to Union Island for the User Group session, even if we didn’t all make it to the same place at the same time! ;)

We had 6 people attending over the course of the evening, and some interesting perspectives from around the movement, and from the US, UK and Switzerland. A good practical suggestion was that we set aside time more often for people to meet informally in the bar, without an agenda or any expectation like at a User Group meeting – just a time that people know they can meet other virtual world engaged unionists. This is a great idea, and one we’ll hopefully be able to work on soon.

Some of us also discussed the implications of organising and campaigning in a 3rd party owned environment like Second Life. Whilst providers like Linden Lab, Facebook and their ilk are user-neutral, and welcome people using their services for pretty much any purpose, there are issues about how much capacity they have within a commercial customer services framework to evaluate some of the shades of grey issues in moderating campaigning and direct action. Linden Lab have partially clarified their terms and conditions that are concerning some activists, but it doesn’t rule out incidents in SL like Facebook’s Blackadder Affair earlier this year.

User Group update – aaaarghh! Tue, 01 Apr 2008 19:19:26 +0000 Johninnit Ni Okay, maybe this is an April fool after all… We line up a meeting for 12 noon SLT, the exact time the Lindens start releasing the new Havoc version. And everything gets borked. No tps, logins, whatever, and definitely no user group meeting. If you make it in, good luck! I’ll sit out the problem if anyone wants to meet when it’s fixed. If not, thanks very much for trying to make it, and sorry for the c*ck up.

UPDATE 1pm SLT: Well, I’m back in now (sort of), and the tumbleweed is blowing through SL until everyone else can get in too. If you’re about still, have a go at logging in and come by for a bit. Sorry again though for the horrendous foul up (for once not my fault!)

Come join us from 8pm UK time (9pm Central Europe time or 12 noon Second Life time), to meet other SL unionists and have your say on how the Union Island project develops. Hope to see you there!

User Group report Wed, 05 Mar 2008 10:37:41 +0000 Unionisland Republic User Group second session

Many thanks to everyone who came along to our first ever User Group meetings. 13 avatars came by to discuss the project and how we should develop it (here are snaps of most of them), and we got some really great ideas on things like better engagement with German speakers, viral freebies to raise awareness of the project, working with labor/business departments of universities in SL, and low-key codes of conduct to help us deal more consistently with people who flaunt them. Speaking of which, we even had our first spot of minor griefing, which is another milestone of sorts! ;)

We staggered it to let people from different time zones chip in, though I think one important lesson was that the times weren’t very good for most Americans, and we need a better outpost in a time zone that overlaps with US leisure time. Anyway, a promising and enthusiastic start and we hope we can build on that for future User Group meetings as our group is growing by the day (search in SL under the groups tag if you’d like to join).

User Group first session

Here’s Annette’s take on it from her blog, ASM.

We’re holding it twice to make it time-zone friendly, but you’re very welcome to either (or both) of the sessions. See you there!

UPDATE: We hope to have a presentation on Mansour Osanloo and the situation for unionists in Iran from Makulata Waco of the ITF at the 9am GMT session.

User Group first meeting announced Thu, 17 Jan 2008 10:55:07 +0000 Unionisland Republic We’ve scheduled a date for the first meeting of the Union Island User Group. It’ll be 4 March 2008. We’re holding two, one at 9am GMT and one at 7pm GMT so that we can have more convenient timings for a greater number of people around the world – just drop in to whichever suits you best.

If you want to keep up with the group, you can join it in SL – run a search for “Union Island User Group”. Hope to see you at the meeting – please come along and let us know how you think the project should be developing.
