The TUC and AFL-CIO believe that workers throughout the world should have the right to organise, and be represented by independent trade unions. the message to employers is clear. But in the US union busting is big business. Employers routinely use ‘union avoidance’ consultants to prevent workers exercising their fundamental right to join and be represented by a union.

This problem is much more limited in the UK, but there is still a hard-core of employers prepared to play dirty to prevent their employees gaining a union voice.

In recognition of this problem – and in an effort to make sure workers on both sides of the Atlantic can unionise without fear of losing their jobs and livelihoods – the AFL-CIO and TUC have signed a joint charter setting out a programme of work to ‘bust the busters’.
